A digital billboard can look straightforward once it is live: a bright, reliable screen delivering campaigns around the clock. Behind that performance sits an electrical installation that must be correctly specified from the outset. This guide to billboard electrical requirements explains the practical decisions that affect safety, programme timescales, operating costs and long-term reliability for UK sites.
Electrical provision should never be treated as a final-stage item. The available supply, cable route, location of isolation, protection strategy and testing arrangements all need to work alongside the display design, steelwork, planning conditions and site operations. Address these details early and the installation is far less likely to face expensive changes once equipment and contractors are on site.
Start with the billboard’s actual power demand
The first question is not simply whether there is a nearby electrical supply. It is whether that supply has sufficient capacity for the screen at its expected operating conditions. LED billboard power consumption changes with screen size, pixel pitch, brightness setting, content and ambient light. A full-colour outdoor display showing predominantly bright content in daylight will draw more power than the same display operating at reduced brightness after dark.
A responsible specification considers both maximum and typical consumption. Maximum load informs circuit design, protective devices and supply capacity. Typical consumption is more useful when forecasting running costs. For an advertising operator, this distinction matters: a system that appears economical on an average-load figure may still require a substantial electrical supply to operate safely at peak demand.
The screen manufacturer should provide clear load data for the proposed configuration, including the control system, communications equipment and any ancillary items such as ventilation or cabinet heating. A bespoke screen deserves a bespoke assessment. Standard figures can be useful at budget stage, but they are not a substitute for a final electrical design based on the equipment being supplied.
Allow for future operation, not only day-one use
The supply should also account for sensible future requirements. A site may later add a second face, a larger display, a monitoring system or associated signage. In some locations, future capacity costs very little to accommodate while cabling and containment are being installed. In others, particularly where a new connection is required, it can be a significant investment. The right answer depends on the commercial plan for the site and the capacity available from the local network.
Establish where the supply will come from
For a digital billboard on an existing commercial property, the preferred option may be a dedicated circuit from the building’s distribution board. This is often practical where spare capacity is confirmed and the proposed cable route is manageable. The property operator will normally need to approve the connection, access arrangements and any shutdown required for the work.
Remote roadside, retail park and standalone billboard locations can be more complex. The nearest supply may not have enough available capacity, may be privately owned, or may require a lengthy route across land with restricted access. In these cases, discussions with the electricity network operator and site owner should start early. A new metered connection can involve lead times, excavation, wayleave considerations and costs that materially influence the project programme.
It is also essential to establish who will pay for electricity and how consumption will be measured. A dedicated meter gives a clear route for billing and removes ambiguity where a billboard is installed on a landlord’s supply. For multi-tenant sites, this can prevent disputes long after the installation team has left.
Design the installation around UK electrical standards
Billboard electrical work must be designed and installed by competent professionals in accordance with the applicable UK requirements. In practice, this will usually include compliance with BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, together with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and relevant building, landlord and local authority requirements.
The exact design will depend on the site, the equipment and the supply arrangement. That is why a site survey is so valuable. It identifies factors that cannot be reliably assessed from drawings alone, including existing earthing arrangements, the condition of the distribution equipment, potential cable routes, vehicle movements, public access and exposure to water.
For outdoor electronic billboards, the electrical installation must suit a demanding environment. Enclosures, glands, connectors and containment need an appropriate ingress protection rating for their location. Cable entries should prevent water tracking into cabinets. External equipment must be mounted and sealed properly, rather than relying on temporary weather protection that will deteriorate over time.
Protection, earthing and isolation
Protective measures are central to a safe billboard installation. The final arrangement should be determined by the competent electrical designer, but it commonly includes correctly selected overcurrent protection, suitable earth fault protection, verified earthing and bonding, and local means of isolation.
A lockable local isolator is particularly important. It allows authorised personnel to safely isolate the screen for planned maintenance, fault investigation or emergency response without searching for a remote distribution board. It should be accessible to the maintenance team but protected from unauthorised use and damage.
Residual current device protection may be required depending on the circuit design and applicable regulations. However, an RCD is not a catch-all answer. Device selection, discrimination with upstream protection and the nature of the electronic load all need consideration. Poorly coordinated protection can cause nuisance tripping, taking a revenue-generating display offline when it should be operating.
Surge protection is another area worth considering carefully. Outdoor screens are connected electronic systems, often located on exposed structures and supplied by long cable runs. The risk profile varies by site, but voltage surges can affect LED modules, power supplies and control hardware. Appropriate protection, combined with correct earthing, can reduce avoidable failures and support a more resilient installation.
Plan cable routes before construction begins
Cable routing is often where a simple installation becomes difficult. The route must be safe, protected, maintainable and visually appropriate for the site. A cable across a public area, vehicle route or exposed façade needs a different solution from one running within a secure plant room.
At ground level, cables may need to be buried in suitable ducting with warning tape and appropriate mechanical protection. Routes near car parks, delivery areas and access roads must consider loading from vehicles and future excavation work. On a building, cable containment needs to be fixed securely, protected from corrosion and coordinated with cladding, drainage and fire-stopping requirements.
The route into the billboard structure also deserves attention. Cables should be supported correctly and protected from sharp edges, vibration and movement. A neat route is not merely cosmetic. It makes inspections easier, reduces the chance of accidental damage and reflects the quality of the wider installation.
Coordinate electrical works with structural and access planning
Electrical design cannot be separated from the physical billboard installation. A freestanding structure may need routes through foundations or columns, while a wall-mounted screen may require services to be concealed before final finishes are completed. Leaving these decisions until the last minute can lead to exposed cables, disruptive rework or compromises that are difficult to maintain.
Access planning matters just as much. Engineers need safe access to isolators, control cabinets and service points throughout the life of the display. Consider how maintenance personnel will reach the equipment, whether access can be achieved without disrupting tenants or customers, and who controls keys or permits for restricted areas.
Where a billboard is visible to the public, the installation should also be designed with site safety in mind. Electrical equipment must be secure, cable routes should not create trip hazards, and control hardware should not be vulnerable to tampering. These are practical details, but they are often the difference between a reliable asset and an ongoing facilities issue.
Test, certify and document the completed installation
Before the billboard is commissioned, the electrical installation should be inspected, tested and certified by the appropriate competent person. Documentation should confirm the work carried out and provide the information needed for safe future maintenance. Depending on the scope of work, this may include electrical installation certification, test results, circuit details and equipment information.
Commissioning should verify more than whether the screen illuminates. The team should check isolation, protective operation, stable power delivery, screen controls, brightness settings and communications performance. Where monitoring is provided, it should be configured so that faults can be identified promptly rather than only when the screen is noticed offline.
Keep the handover information with the site’s operation and maintenance records. Facilities teams should know the supply location, isolator position, circuit reference, emergency contact route and any particular maintenance restrictions. This is especially useful where building management changes or responsibilities move between landlord, operator and advertising partner.
Build ongoing checks into the operating plan
A quality electrical installation is designed for service, not simply for handover. Outdoor equipment faces temperature changes, moisture, vibration, contamination and occasional accidental damage. Periodic inspection helps identify loose glands, compromised seals, damaged containment or signs of water ingress before they become a larger failure.
The inspection frequency should reflect the site environment, equipment type and risk assessment. A sheltered display within a managed commercial estate may need a different regime from a large roadside installation exposed to weather and traffic. Planned servicing also provides an opportunity to confirm that cabinet ventilation remains clear and that electrical components are operating within expected conditions.
