How to Assess Screen Brightness for Digital Signs

A screen can look exceptionally bright in a showroom and still disappear when installed outside a retail park at midday. Equally, an over-specified indoor display can cause glare, waste energy and become uncomfortable to view. Knowing how to assess screen brightness properly is therefore not a matter of choosing the highest figure on a specification sheet. It is about matching the screen to its location, audience and operating conditions.

For a commercial digital signage investment, brightness affects visibility, content impact, operating cost and the long-term experience of everyone using the space. A sound assessment before procurement reduces the risk of a display that looks underpowered in sunlight or unnecessarily harsh after dark.

Start with nits, but do not stop there

Screen brightness is normally measured in nits, also written as cd/m² (candelas per square metre). This measures the light emitted by the display itself. The higher the nit rating, the brighter the screen can appear.

Nits are useful because they provide a common technical reference point, but they are not a complete answer. A 2,500-nit screen may be entirely suitable under a covered entrance canopy, yet insufficient for a south-facing roadside billboard with direct sun exposure. Meanwhile, that same 2,500-nit output would be excessive for many indoor locations.

As a broad starting point, indoor LED displays often operate effectively between 600 and 1,500 nits, depending on surrounding light and viewing distance. Screens in bright shop windows or transport concourses may need more. Outdoor commercial LED billboards commonly require around 5,000 nits or above to remain legible in daylight, although the right level depends on the exact site.

The key point is that maximum brightness is not the same as required operating brightness. A quality system should have enough headroom for difficult conditions while dimming accurately when conditions change.

Measure the light at the actual installation site

The most dependable way to assess screen brightness is to understand the ambient light reaching the proposed display position. Ambient light is measured in lux, which is different from nits. Lux describes the light falling onto a surface; nits describe the light emitted from the screen.

A site survey should record light levels at the screen location, not simply make assumptions based on whether the installation is described as indoor or outdoor. A glazed atrium, for example, can be brighter than a shaded external wall. Reflections from paving, glass façades, nearby buildings and passing vehicles can all affect perceived contrast.

Readings should be taken at different times where practical. Morning, midday, late afternoon and dusk may each present very different conditions. This matters particularly on sites with an eastern or western aspect, where low sun can strike the display directly. Seasonal changes should also be considered. A location shaded by foliage in summer may receive far more light in winter, while sun angles alter significantly throughout the year.

A professional survey combines lux readings with a visual assessment of direct sunlight, reflected light, sightlines and any obstructions. It gives the project team evidence on which to specify the display, rather than relying on a generic brightness recommendation.

Assess brightness against the viewing environment

Brightness only works when it supports clear, comfortable viewing. The intended audience and the way they encounter the display are central to the decision.

For a large-format roadside screen, viewers may be travelling past quickly and viewing from a considerable distance. The screen needs enough output and contrast to make key content immediately readable in changing daylight. In a shopping centre, people may stand nearby, approach from several directions or spend time waiting beside the display. Here, visual comfort and controlled dimming can matter just as much as peak output.

Viewing angle also has a bearing on perceived brightness. LED modules can appear brightest when viewed directly from the front, with performance changing at wider angles. A display positioned above a concourse, around a corner or beside a road must be designed for the real approach routes, not only for the ideal front-on view.

Pixel pitch, screen size and content resolution should be considered alongside brightness. A bright display with a pixel pitch unsuited to the viewing distance may still look poor. Conversely, a well-matched pixel pitch and clear content can make a display more effective without simply increasing light output.

Consider contrast, not brightness in isolation

A screen has to compete with its background. This is why contrast is often more relevant to readability than the maximum nit figure alone.

Contrast is the difference between the bright parts of the image and the dark parts. In a high-ambient-light environment, blacks can appear washed out and fine details may be lost. Good LED display design addresses this through appropriate brightness, quality LED components, surface treatment, cabinet design and sensible content choices.

Content should be designed for the location. A roadside advertising screen benefits from high-contrast layouts, bold type, limited copy and clear imagery. Small pale text on a light photographic background may be difficult to read even on a high-output display. The goal is not to make every creative asset as bright as possible, but to ensure it can be understood at the available viewing distance and dwell time.

This is also where an on-site content test can be valuable. Reviewing sample campaigns on a representative panel, in the actual environment, can reveal issues that technical figures alone will not show.

Use automatic brightness control properly

An outdoor display should not run at full brightness around the clock. As daylight falls, an unchanged output can cause glare, create an unpleasant viewing experience and use more energy than necessary.

Automatic brightness control uses light sensors to adjust output in response to ambient conditions. For outdoor billboards, this is a core operational requirement rather than an optional extra. The sensor must be correctly located so that it reflects the light conditions experienced by the screen, rather than being shaded or exposed in a way that produces misleading readings.

The dimming programme also needs careful commissioning. A system that reacts too aggressively can make visible changes in output as clouds pass overhead. One that reacts too slowly may remain overly bright after sunset. The best result is stable, gradual adjustment with sensible minimum and maximum limits for the site.

Indoor screens can benefit from automatic dimming too, especially in venues with skylights, variable retail lighting or operating hours that extend from daylight into evening. Manual overrides may be useful for special events, but routine operation should be straightforward for the site team.

Account for reliability, weather and maintenance

Brightness performance is not fixed for the life of a display. LEDs gradually depreciate over time, and real-world output can be affected by temperature, power management, component quality and maintenance standards. Specifying a screen solely on an initial peak-brightness claim can create problems later.

For outdoor installations, assess the display as a complete engineered system. The cabinet should be suitable for the local environment, with appropriate protection against moisture, dust and temperature variation. Effective heat management helps the LEDs and power systems operate consistently, particularly during warm weather or prolonged high-output use.

Brightness uniformity is equally significant. A large screen should appear even across its full area, without obvious darker modules or colour variation. This depends on quality manufacturing, calibration and a supplier able to support the product after installation. A screen that is technically bright but visibly uneven does not present a professional advertising platform.

Ask how brightness calibration is handled at commissioning and what support is available if modules need replacing in future. Replacement parts should be selected and calibrated to blend with the existing display as closely as possible.

Include local context and responsible operation

For public-facing digital signage, brightness must be appropriate not only for the audience but also for neighbouring properties, road users and the wider setting. A display near homes, traffic routes or sensitive locations may need more conservative night-time limits. Planning conditions or site-specific requirements can also affect how the screen is operated.

This does not mean a screen must be dim and ineffective. It means the display should be designed with enough range to be highly visible in daylight and restrained after dark. Responsible brightness control protects the value of the installation and helps maintain a positive relationship with neighbours, landlords and local stakeholders.

A practical way to assess screen brightness

The strongest projects follow a straightforward sequence: inspect the proposed site, measure ambient light, map viewing positions, identify the most demanding daylight conditions, then select a display with suitable output and controlled dimming. Test representative content where possible and review the operational settings before handover.

There is no single nit rating that suits every commercial display. A reception screen, a retail window, a railway platform display and a large outdoor billboard each have different demands. The right specification is the one that delivers legibility and impact in its real environment without introducing glare, excess energy use or avoidable maintenance risk.
